Market Overview

Rhode Island’s electricity market became restructured in 1998, allowing consumers the ability to shop for competitive electricity supply. Initially rates were capped so low that no real competition occurred, recently these caps were lifted and electric rate increases were approved to keep pace with rising fuel costs and customers can now benefit by switching to a competitive supplier.

Rhode Island is part of ISO New England, which is a regional transmission organization (RTO) – serving Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. ISO New England is the governing body that ensures the day-to-day reliability of New England’s bulk power generation and transmission system by overseeing and ensuring the fair administration of the region’s wholesale electricity markets, and by managing comprehensive, regional planning processes.

Through restructuring customers have the option to switch over to a competitive supplier such as Mint Energy. Mint Energy representatives are available to explain the available pricing options as well as guide you through the competitive supply process.
