Market Overview

Beginning in March 2000, Maine’s electric industry was restructured to open the supply portion of electric service to a competitive market. With this consumers have the ability to shop for a competitive electric supplier.

Maine is part of ISO New England which is a regional transmission organization (RTO), serving Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont as well as Rhode Island. ISO New England is the governing body that ensures the day-to-day reliable operation of New England’s bulk power generation and transmission system, by overseeing and ensuring the fair administration of the region’s wholesale electricity markets, and by managing comprehensive, regional planning processes.
